Sun Life Financial has partnered with the Canadian Football League (CFL)
and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund (JDRF) to help promote awareness of this terribly debilitating disease. Thousands every year are diagnosed with diabetes which attacks
and destroys the cells of the pancreas, an organ in the body about the size of a hand located in the lower part of the stomach.
These cells which are known as beta cells have a very important function. The beta cells under normal conditions produce
insulin, a chemical messenger that helps the body move sugar from food sources into cells throughout the body. As you can
imagine, when this normal reaction is interrupted, the beta cells aren't being produced and that sugar stays in the blood
stream instead, where it can and usually does cause serious damage to all the organ systems in the body and starves cells
of their normal energy source. For this reason, those who suffer this type of diabetes (T1D) must monitor their blood sugar
levels throughout their day and inject insulin in order to stay alive.
Therefore, the JDRF cure research goal is to try to restore the normal function of the pancreas.
A long and healthy life is what we all strive for, so why should those afflicted with diabetes be any different. Living
with such a disease can't be very rewarding or pleasant, so through the research and dedication of scientists we will find
a way to rid the world of Type 1 diabetes (T1D).
In
partnering with the CFL, Sun Life has committed to donating $101 to the JDRF every
time a successful field goal is kicked through the uprights during the regular season, up to $40,000.00, in honour of celebrating
the playing of 101st Grey Cup Championship Game. At the end of the season, the individual team cities JDRF affiliations will
be rewarded with the donation.
They have
also just launched the Kick Diabetes Facebook contest. True fans of the CFL will also
have an opportunity to "donate a kick" by selecting their favourite CFL team online using the app, they will also
have a great opportunity to win a pair of 2014 CFL season tickets or one of 11 CFL jerseys simply by entering. The contest
runs from now until November 2nd. Good luck to all who participate in this very worthy cause. Also, an additional $10,000.00
will then be donated to JDRF in the city whose team accumulated the highest number of "donated kicks" by the end
of the season.
So, not only do you get to
take part in helping those who are suffering with T1D, you may be one of the lucky ones to win a great prize too. I have
a couple of football fans in my house, and they are anxiously watching to see how many field goals are scored each week.
WonderMoms wishes everyone who enters, Good
Luck!
