Are you looking for a quick family getaway? The Great Wolf Lodge in Niagara Falls is close enough to make that happen. Oh, and by the way, apparently there is even a big waterfall there too. They
offer great value, as the waterpark passes are included with your stay. They offer great food, convenience, a very casual
atmosphere and above all a safe family environment to enjoy your time together.
The resort consists of several different room (suite) configurations to accommodate families of all sizes and varying
budgets. A great end of day retreat to put your feet up and relax. Rustic country living complete with exposed logs and
beams inspires all the rooms.
Our gracious hosts were made
aware that we had been guests several times before and that we had not taken the time to really explore the whole package
and everything that the hotel has to offer. The previous trips usually consisted of leaving mid afternoon and making the
50 minute drive down the QEW to Niagara in hopes that we got in enough swim time before bed. Back up early the next morning
and downstairs just in time for the doors to the waterpark to open. We would spend another 4-5 hours there before packing
up and heading home.
This trip however, was very different
from all our previous visits. Firstly our room, the Majestic Bear Suite was this amazing place with a king size four-poster
log bed set apart from the rest of the room where the children slept. We were able to stay up a little later and watch TV
while enjoying an adult beverage. A giant granite table complete with 6 chairs allowed us to eat a meal in our room away
from all the hustle and bustle from downstairs.
Resort guests have a multitude of dining options- Camp Critter Bar
& Grille, The Antler Shanty Grub, Northwood's Pizza, Sprit Island Snack Shop and Grizzly Rob's Bar. We made an effort
to try as much as we could. The dinner buffet was very good and worth the cost. All the kids ate their fill and there were
no complaints. The next morning we had a full day planned including couples massages for the adults and mani-pedi's for the
kiddies. A nice lunch poolside and several dips in the pool.
We
were made aware of some inclement weather back home and we made the executive decision to stay another night as we were all
having such a great time. The kids were all in agreement and a round of applause was warranted.
For resort guests with little children they have a story time in the main lobby where the
characters all speak and leave a look of wonder on all the faces. It really is a fun way to end the day. In fact, many guests
show up in their PJ's as well. For those guests who have unlimited energy, there is also a great arcade complete with bowling
alleys. Baby sitting services are available upon request.
The
one thing that I found very reassuring about the waterpark was the level of safety. It seemed everywhere you looked there
was a lifeguard on duty. It made me feel a lot more at ease and relaxed knowing they were there. Many hotels we have visited
in the past offer lifeguard services, but it always looks to be a chore. The GWL team looks enthused and attentive. The
waterpark wristbands can be set up for many different functions upon checking in. You can apply charge privileges for things
such as food and drink. They also double as your room keys so there is no need to carry extra things in your pockets while
swimming.
One of my favourite pastimes has to be soaking in a hot tub. The
last few times there, we spent some time with the kids in the family tub. I was not aware until this visit that the lodge
has an outdoor tub, exclusive to guests 18 or older. It was truly magical sitting outside with the snow falling down around
you. Taking a brief 10-minute dip away from hundreds of excited children riding down the waterslides was like heaven.
The big hit this time though had to be MagiQuest- a live action adventure game
for children of all ages. Lights and props are set up throughout the lobby area and are very thought provoking. Game players
gather information and points in hopes of completing all the tasks and adventures. Your game information is saved for you
to resume upon your next visit. The kids loved it and it kept them occupied for 2-3 hours while daddy and I sat in the lobby
in front of the roaring fireplace with a glass of red wine.
GWL
has only one mission; to make sure that your stay is a memorable one. It shows that they take pride in what they do, as everyone
is always smiling and telling you to have a, "Great Wolf day." 2014 was a banner year for GWL as they ranked very
highly on several travel industry blogs and rating sites.
