My favourite time of year is upon us. The thrill
of seeing the excitement in the kid's eyes as they choose, design and put together their costumes for the Halloween trick
or treating celebration. I love the autumn season and what it brings to the neighbourhood. Red, orange, and gold leaves
look amazing as they tumble to the ground. We all know what comes next though...The US Thanksgiving, Black Friday, the holiday football games and the biggest shopping season of
them all, Christmas.
I may not be an expert
in every facet of the shopping world, but I know that with a large family, I must be smart about how and where I spend my
money. As is usually the case, the kids are beginning to prepare their wish list.
I have put together some handy pointers that have worked for me in the past and are sure
to work for you too.
Firstly, if you do your
research (online price checking) before heading out, you will no doubt find the lowest price. If purchased within 30 days
of Christmas, you may be in line for price protection guarantees. Many stores offer free 30 price matches. Take comfort
and shop with confidence.
Some of the larger
retailers offer free gift-wrapping services. I recently added up what I spent last year on wrapping paper, bows and cards.
I was shocked to find out that I doled out over $100.00 in gift-wrapping supplies. I realize it takes the personal touch
out of the equation, but that $100.00 could be better spent.
About four years ago I took the advice of a friend who suggested that I pick only one credit card for all
my purchases. After thinking of the benefits of doing such a thing, I jumped right in with both feet. Using only one card
made sense right off the bat. With only one bill to track for all my purchases along with the added benefits that go along
with some credit cards, it just makes perfect sense.
American
Express Credit Cards have always been front and center when it comes to calculating the "value-added" features that
the credit card business has to offer. In most cases, the interest that you pay is about the same no matter what card you
decide to use. It's the other add-ons that make American Express stand above the rest.
They have just launched a new card: the SimplyCash™ Card from American Express. It has all the same benefits (value-adds) of the traditional
Amex Card, such as Front Of The Line (FOTL) ticket purchasing, travel insurance, and purchase insurances. However, what makes
this Card stand out is that it pays (suggest: rewards you) you for every purchase. They will giveyou cash back every time
you shop! You can earn 5% cash back on all eligible purchases at gas stations, grocery stores and restaurants in Canada (up
to $250 cash back) and 1.25% on all other purchases for the first 6 months. Then 1.25% cash back on everything you buy after
the first 6 months.
A recent survey found
that most Canadians (92%) want to shop around in order to find the best deals, but busy schedules and lack of discipline make
it hard to actually do it. Using the SimplyCash Card makes it all that much easier.
We all work way too hard for our money, so making it work for you is of utmost importance.
This Christmas the family is contemplating a trip south to spend with family in Florida. If it actually comes to fruition,
I will no doubt, be equipped with my new American Express SimplyCash Card.
